This evening my family and I dined at a local restaurant on the Island (yes, I did just say that), Waterzooi. I will not lie, we have eaten here before (my family a couple of times and myself once).

The first time I went to Waterzooi, I enjoyed it, don’t ask me what I got, it was about a year ago, but I remember it being pretty tasty. My sister likes to devour mussels and the menu offers no less than 12 different kinds, not including one or two that are usually served as specials. Therefore, it apparently has been frequented by my family while I was away.

It was pretty quiet when we arrived at 7 pm and we were seated right away. The beer and wine menu has a nice selection (to be expected for a Belgian bistro). I ended up ordering one of the specials, grouper with a crab meat risotto and a coconut sauce. It was ok, not great, but ok. The piece of fish I received wasn’t the best piece and there was more crab meat in the risotto than actual risotto (very disappointing because I do love risotto). I was actually most hesitant to order the dish because of the coconut sauce, sometimes it can be overwhelming. However, the sauce was extremely light and flavorful. Additionally, they provided the perfect amount to accompany the meal. The mussels were apparently good, but sister sucked them down so quickly I didn’t have time to ask her.

Now I need to pick on their website a bit. I know this is not completely food related, but it is important because appearances are important and can be a determining factor when choosing a restaurant. The whole roating food graphic on top is far too fast and making me dizzy. Also, I had to download the menu as a pdf, which is just annoying. I want to view it on screen so I don’t need to delete a file from my computer.

In the end, I was slightly disappointed by my second trip to Waterzooi. I did like it the first time I went, but this time was a miss. I would not be surprised if I head there again with the folks next time I’m in town though (which as my my mom mentioned, might not even be until next Thanksgiving!). Until then, I recommend the mussels, from what I can tell, they’re delicious.
